Y1- Hedgehog Class
Hello all
Nearly the 'Summer Holidays' how weird does that sound especially as we've been at home for so long already!
What plans do you all have? Perhaps now things are getting better you might venture off somewhere?
Whatever happens I hope you all remain safe and enjoy it whatever you decide to do!
Take care and stay safe!
Regards
Mr Jones

Welcome to the Hedgehog Class page
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas!?
Seems like only yesterday that we were having our class parties and I was parading around the hall as one of East 17!
Anyway welcome back.
If you are reading this with your children then they may have seen the item on the Homework for this term about looking for the photos on this page. If so then they must come and see me for 5 house points! They must give me the secret password which is Baldric. They must not share the password as we don't want others getting house points for free :-)
Year 1 Terms 3 and 4
English -
We shall be continuing with Phonics as we did last term. All children have made great progress since we started the Read Write Inc scheme and I am confident they will continue to do so. These sessions are all encompassing, focusing not only on reading and decoding, but spoken language and writing also. As stated before, your child's books may seem easy to read, but they have been learning them for sometime and they should therefore be able to read them easily, but more importantly, understand them too.
We have a new topic for the next two terms, Knights, Castles, Dragons and Princesses. Our question is; Why are dragons and knights always fighting?
If you children have any books or other items they want to bring in and share that would be great and thank you in advance!
Maths - We shall be continuing with addition and subtraction, started last term, consolidating learning and honing these skills. We shall be looking at place value in numbers up to 50 and also looking at measures including weight, volume, height and length.
Science - Seasonal change - looking at the differences between Autumn and Winter then moving onto Everyday Materials, looking at what things are made from and their properties.
PE - Hockey - hand to eye co-ordination, grip, running with a stick and scoring plenty of goals are on the agenda.
Topic - Knights, Castles, Dragons and Princesses
Question: Why are dragons and knights always fighting? Our studies will include a look at Henry VIII, castles in all four countries of the UK, Map work and compass points, learning to play the recorder, cooking Tudor style as well as designing our own dragons and Coat of Arms.
Trips over the coming terms will be to two castles, details of these will follow.
All our learning will be based around answering our question. All work in other curriculum subjects, History, Geography Art and DT will be linked to the topic and our aim will be to answer this question.
Weekly Routines
Wednesday is PE and Forest School day (alternate weeks)
Please can children have a complete and named kit in school
and those children with earrings have these taken out for PE days! On days when it is Forest School, please can children bring in appropriate clothing for working outside.
